The National Caretaker Committee (NCC) of Labour Party (LP) has constituted a Disciplinary charged with recommending sanctions against its erstwhile chairman, Barr. Julius Abure and also audit the financial transactions carried out during his tenure.
The NCC further passed Vote of Confidence on the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, the party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi and also apologized to both on some over the unguarded utterances unleashed on the duo by Abure.
This development comes barely two weeks after the embattled Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure constituted a Disciplinary Committee against governor Alex Otti, Peter Obi and others.
Addressing a World Press Conference on Wednesday in Abuja, NCC Chairman, Sen. Nenadi Usman said that the move has become necessary to restore sanity in the party.
She said that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party after its meeting wants Abure to respond within 24hours why disciplinary actions should not be taken against him for continuing to parade himself as the National Chairman of the party and engaging in other activities inimical to the cohesion of the party despite the unequivocal judgement of the Supreme Court.
“After a careful and comprehensive review of the Supreme Court judgment delivered on Friday, April 4, 2025, the National Executive Council (NEC) is deeply concerned by the subsequent actions of Barr. Julius Abure, particularly his continued impersonation of the esteemed office of the National Chairman of the Labour Party. These actions have not only violated the spirit and letter of the law but have also brought the image and integrity of our great party into disrepute.
“In the exercise of its constitutional mandate and in strict accordance with the disciplinary provisions of the Labour Party Constitution 2019 (As Amended), the NEC, in session, hereby announces the commencement of disciplinary actions against Mr. Abure. These actions have started with the constitution of a special investigative committee to review the actions of Mr. Abure as it affects the image and integrity of the party. In line with due process and the party constitution, NEC gives Mr. Abure 48 hours’ notice to show why disciplinary actions would not be taken against him for his numerous acts of misconduct against the party. The formal notice of disciplinary actions will be sent to the last known address of Barr. Julius Abure” she stated.
She stated that Abure and his co-travellers’ divisive actions and familiar manipulative antics threaten the integrity, public image and unity of the party adding that “It is in this spirit of responsibility to safeguard our cherished democratic ideals of the Labour Party and consequent upon Mr. Abure’s unabated misrepresentation and impersonation of the office of the National Chairman of the Labour Party that the NEC in session have reached a hard but necessary decision”.
The five-member disciplinary committee is to be led by Sen. Ireti Kingibe while Chief Peter Ameh will serve as secretary.
She commended members and leaders of the party, for their tireless efforts in advancing democratic ideals and the vision of the limitless possibilities of a new Nigeria.
“We call on all Labour Party members across Nigeria, irrespective of past disagreements or affiliations, to continue to support the current leadership and refused to be demonized by Abure who has played his last card and just clutching at straws. The Labour Party is your home, and we need every hand on deck to build the Party of our dreams”.
She announced that the party will very soon commence registration exercise to enable new members who love the values of the party to come in. She also said that the party has also communicated to the Independent Nationals Electoral Commission (INEC) that it will soon start congresses from ward to national to usher in legitimate executives.
“In furtherance of this, we have formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of our planned activities, including the forthcoming ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses, culminating in the National Convention. Full details and schedules will be communicated to all stakeholders in the coming days”.
On why the NCC is yet to take over the National Secretariat of the party, the NCC Secretary Sen. Darlington Nwokocha responded in metaphor “Where the Bishop of Pope is, there is the Cathedral”.
The Press Briefing was attended by a representative of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) members of the National Assembly as well as NCC executives.
