The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced reconstruction of three collapsed towers on the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line, following a windstorm that brought them down on Wednesday, May 7.
According to TCN, three contractors have been deployed to the site, with each handling the re-erection of a single tower. This, the company says, is a strategic move to speed up restoration and reduce the outage period.
“The collapse occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m. due to a heavy windstorm,” Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs at TCN said in a statement on Saturday.
“To accelerate the restoration process, we mobilized three different contractors. Each is assigned to reconstruct one tower, working under the supervision of our engineers,” she added.
The incident disrupted bulk power supply to Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, affecting some of its customers in the Northwest. However, TCN has activated contingency supply routes to ease the impact.
“Currently, Sokoto and Birnin Kebbi are receiving between 6 MW and 7 MW from the Mando Transmission Substation,” Mbah said.
“This power is being routed through the 132kV Mando-Zaria-Funtua-Gusau-Talata Mafara-Sokoto-Birnin Kebbi line,” she added.
She appealed to residents and electricity consumers in the affected areas for understanding during the reconstruction period.
“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused by the tower collapse and appreciate the patience of affected communities,” she said. “Our team is working diligently to complete the rebuild and restore full power supply as quickly as possible.”
The 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line is a critical part of Nigeria’s national grid infrastructure, serving as a major conduit for power delivery to the Northwest region.
