Suspected herdsmen linked to the recent attacks in Benue State’s Yelwata community have been apprehended at the Nasarawa-Benue border. Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, confirmed the arrests, crediting intelligence-led operations by security agencies.
The Governor during an interview on national television lauded the successful joint effort by the police and other security outfits. He stated that “several gunmen believed to be connected to the killings in Benue were arrested,” underscoring the effectiveness of the operation.
The Governor commended security agents in Nasarawa State for their proactiveness and vigilance, which he said was crucial in preventing the escalation of violence across the Nasarawa/Benue border. He also appealed to those perpetrating violence to embrace peace.
Corroborating the Governor’s statement, Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Umar Nadada, confirmed the arrests of the suspected herdsmen around the border area.
According to CP Nadada, the suspects were found in possession of dangerous weapons, including AK-47 rifles, which they allegedly intended to use for further attacks.
“Our security architecture has been put on high alert since the escalation of violence in Benue,” CP Nadada explained. “They were caught with AK-47s and other dangerous weapons. Investigations are ongoing.”
The arrests mark a crucial development in addressing the persistent security challenges and inter-state conflicts plaguing the region.
