In a move that may douse early political speculations ahead of the 2027 general elections, Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, has publicly dismissed calls positioning him as a potential running mate to President Bola Tinubu.
Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, disowned the campaigns on Tuesday through a statement released by his media adviser, Ismail Mudashir.
He described the moves as “misplaced, ill-timed and counterproductive,” warning that such early political agitations could distract the current administration from fulfilling its Renewed Hope Agenda promises to Nigerians.
The Deputy Senate President’s reaction follows the recent public endorsement by some Northern youth groups, including the Northern Nigeria Progressive Youth Assembly (NNPYA), who have been promoting him as a suitable choice to partner with Tinubu in 2027.
“If you are truly my supporters, the best thing you can do now is rally behind the President and his government. Join hands with him to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Barau appealed in his statement.
Barau emphasized that national interest should supersede personal ambition at this stage of governance, stressing that the administration’s focus should remain on implementing vital reforms rather than engaging in premature political campaigns.
“This is not the season for politicking. It is a time to restore Nigeria’s promise under a focused, reform-driven leadership,” he added.
By firmly distancing himself from early succession talks, Barau has boldly stamped his commitment to stability and governance, reinforcing his full backing for President Tinubu’s current leadership and agenda.
The days and months ahead will reveal wether hos supporters will hush or continue to drag him against his wish.
