Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, have landed in Casablanca, Morocco, to begin their quest for dominance at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), aiming to reclaim their position as the queens of African football.
The nine-time African champions touched down in Morocco’s commercial capital on Wednesday night, flying in from Lisbon, Portugal, where they had been camped for several weeks in preparation for the tournament.
The team’s arrival in Casablanca marks the final stage of their preparations as they join other participating nations ahead of the continental showdown.
Led by American Head Coach Randy Waldrum, the Falcons will be looking to reclaim the title they last won in 2018, after a disappointing fourth-place finish at the 2022 edition also hosted by Morocco, where South Africa emerged champions.
The Nigerian squad, a mix of experienced internationals and promising young talents, is brimming with confidence following a successful training tour in Europe. Team captain Onome Ebi, making what may be her final appearance at a major tournament, said the team is determined to bring the trophy home.
“We are here with one goal which is to win. The disappointment of 2022 is behind us. We’ve trained hard and we’re ready to give it everything,” Ebi stated before the team’s departure from Lisbon.
Star players like Barcelona’s Asisat Oshoala, Atletico Madrid’s Rasheedat Ajibade, and Leicester City’s Ashleigh Plumptre are expected to play key roles in Nigeria’s campaign. Several new faces, including home-based standouts, also made the final squad, reflecting Coach Waldrum’s attempt to blend experience with youthful energy.
Nigeria has been drawn into a competitive group for the tournament, with fixtures expected to begin shortly. The Super Falcons are confident they can navigate the group stages and mount a serious challenge for the title.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has assured the team of maximum support throughout the competition, with President Ibrahim Gusau stating that the Government and football-loving Nigerians are solidly behind the team.
With kickoff just days away, expectations are high across the nation. The Super Falcons carry with them not only the hopes of reclaiming the title but also the pride of a football-loving country eager to witness history being made. From the Sports desk of Pointblanknwes.com, we wish the Super Falcons a soaring time in Morocco.
