The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of relegating governance, orchestrating political dominance and attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the defections confirm its long-held warning that President Bola Tinubu is determined to “undermine democracy and national stability in pursuit of political dominance.”
The statement described the actions of the defecting governors as “political apostasy,” accusing them of betraying their people and aligning with a government that has “made life miserable for the majority of Nigerians.”
“While it may seem like the APC has added more governors to its column, in reality, these governors have abandoned their people to team up with the ruling party that has failed on all fronts — insecurity, economic management, healthcare, and corruption,” the statement read.
Abdullahi said the current hardships faced by Nigerians — rising food prices, unemployment, and worsening insecurity — are clear evidence of APC’s failures. He argued that instead of standing up for their citizens, the defecting governors chose “cowardice and selfish considerations.”
“When the ruling party has misgoverned the country, the only hope for the people in a democracy is for the opposition to rise up in defence and lead them out of misery,” he stated. “But these governors abdicated their responsibility and joined the grand conspiracy against Nigerians.”
Despite the defections, the ADC maintained that the opposition remains united and stronger, noting that the political divide in Nigeria is now clearer than ever.
“While the ruling party celebrates these defections, we are equally delighted that the line has been drawn — between those committed to saving the country and those seeking to join the gravy train. Nigerians can see, and they are waiting,” Abdullahi said.
The party concluded with a rallying call ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that “the next election will not just be a political contest, but a battle between the people of Nigeria and President Tinubu’s APC.”
