Victor Osimhen edged closer to Rashidi Yekini’s all-time Super Eagles goals record after scoring in Nigeria’s victory over Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The strike took Osimhen’s international tally to 35 goals, leaving the Napoli forward just two goals away from equalling Yekini’s long-standing record of 37 goals for Nigeria, a landmark widely regarded as one of the most enduring achievements in the country’s football history.
Speaking after the match, Osimhen described the moment as special but insisted his focus remains on the team’s success.
“It’s always an honour to score for Nigeria, especially at a tournament like AFCON,” he said.
“Records are important, but my main focus is helping the team win and making Nigerians proud.”
Nigeria’s win over Algeria boosted the Super Eagles campaign at the tournament, with Osimhen’s goal proving decisive.
The striker praised his teammates for their collective effort.
“This was a very tough game against a strong Algerian side,” he added.
“Everyone gave their all, and that’s what made the difference.”
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, also lauded Osimhen’s consistency and influence in the squad.
“Victor has been outstanding for the national team,” the coach said.
“He brings leadership, hunger and goals. If he breaks the record, it will be well deserved.”
Rashidi Yekini remains Nigeria’s most prolific scorer, a status he earned through a distinguished international career that included Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and memorable appearances at the FIFA World Cup.
With several matches still to play at AFCON 2025 and more international fixtures ahead, Osimhen is well positioned to close the gap, with the prospect of matching or surpassing Yekini’s record now firmly within reach.
