Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday insisted they would press ahead with impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, accusing the executive of undermining the legislature and failing to resolve the state’s protracted political crisis.
Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt, the lawmakers said the governor “lacked the trust needed to address the crisis rocking the state” and alleged that both he and his deputy had violated provisions of the 1999 Constitution while intimidating members of the House.
“The governor has left us with no choice but to exercise our legislative power to impeach him from office,” one legislator said.
Despite the escalating tensions, the lawmakers expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his intervention in the crisis. They also called on the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, to reconvene plenary to allow the impeachment process to proceed.
In a notable reversal, four lawmakers who had earlier advocated a political solution announced a change in position, pledging their support for the continuation of the impeachment process.
“We now believe that the impeachment path is the best way to restore trust and stability in Rivers State,” they said.
Following the press conference, the lawmakers proceeded to the assembly complex to commence a parliamentary session, signalling that impeachment proceedings are likely to dominate Rivers State’s political landscape in the coming weeks.
