Suspected kidnappers involved in the abduction of medical doctor Ibrahim Tahir and the killing of his younger brother have been arrested in Edo State following a dramatic twist at a hospital.
The suspects were apprehended after bringing their ill child to the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) of the same hospital where Dr. Tahir works. Sources said the doctor was at the facility for routine wound treatment when he recognised the individuals as members of the gang that abducted him weeks earlier.
Shocked by the encounter, Dr. Tahir quietly alerted hospital management, who immediately contacted security operatives. Officers swiftly arrived at the scene and arrested the suspects without incident.
Confirming the arrest, a security source said, “The suspects unknowingly walked straight into the hands of their victim. The doctor identified them instantly and raised the alarm. Our operatives moved in quickly and arrested them before they could escape.”
Dr. Tahir and his younger brother were abducted from their residence in Auchi, Edo State, on January 2, 2025, when armed men stormed the home late at night.
Family members reportedly paid a ransom of ₦50 million after days of negotiations in a desperate bid to secure their release. While Dr. Tahir was later freed, the kidnappers allegedly murdered his younger brother, whose body was discovered days after the payment.
A relative of the victims, who requested anonymity, described the incident as heartbreaking: “We did everything they asked for. We paid the money believing both brothers would come home alive. Instead, they killed the younger one. It was devastating.”
Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the kidnapping syndicate and establish their roles in the crime.
“The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation. We are working to dismantle the entire network behind the crime,” a police spokesperson added.
The dramatic arrest has sparked widespread reactions, with many residents describing it as a rare case of criminals being caught by their own carelessness.
Security agencies have urged the public to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with law enforcement to curb kidnapping and violent crime across the state.
