Constitutional lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, has paid glowing tribute to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo on the occasion of his 89th birthday, describing him as a statesman whose wisdom and influence continue to shape Nigeria’s political landscape.
In a congratulatory message titled “OBJ at 89: Wiser With Age,” Ozekhome said the former military Head of State and later civilian President remains a remarkable national figure whose energy, candour and leadership qualities have endured despite his advanced age.
According to the legal luminary, Obasanjo has remained true to his personality and ideals over the decades, continuing to speak, travel, lecture and engage in public discourse.
“Chief Obasanjo remains a beacon of hope, a symbol of integrity and a champion of Nigeria’s progress. His legacy as a statesman, uncommon leader and nation builder is permanently etched in the nation’s history,” Ozekhome said.
He noted that Obasanjo’s contributions to Nigeria’s political development and democratic growth are immeasurable, adding that his influence extends beyond the country to Africa and the wider Black world.
Reflecting on a personal encounter, Ozekhome recalled how the former president once celebrated him during the 10th convocation lecture of Afe Babalola University, where he delivered the lecture and received an honorary doctorate in law.
“He even sang my birthday song and cut my cake at the event. That moment reflected the warmth, humility and human touch that define Baba Obasanjo,” he said.
Ozekhome also highlighted Obasanjo’s historical role in bringing an end to the Nigerian Civil War, noting that the former military commander accepted the Biafran surrender on behalf of the federal government, an act that helped restore national unity after years of devastating conflict.
Beyond his military and political career, the senior lawyer praised Obasanjo’s intellectual contributions, noting that the elder statesman has authored more than 20 books, including notable works such as My Watch and The Art of Leading.
He said the former president continues to provide guidance on governance and democracy, often speaking out on national issues and urging leaders to uphold justice, fairness and accountability.
“Very often, he speaks truth to power, advocating justice, fairness and equality regardless of the consequences,” Ozekhome stated.
Describing Obasanjo as a towering figure who rose from humble beginnings to global prominence, the lawyer said the former president’s life story remains an inspiration for Nigerians and future generations.
Ozekhome prayed for continued good health and long life for the elder statesman, noting that Nigeria still needs his wisdom and experience.
“As Baba marks his 89th birthday, we pray that God grants him many more years of good health, fulfilment and peace. His wisdom, vision and leadership are needed now more than ever,” he added.
