A 31-year-old California man accused of attacking a high-profile gala attended by Donald Trump is expected in federal court following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington.
Authorities say the suspect stormed the event at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, allegedly attempting to target the president and senior government officials. Security agents quickly intervened after the gunman tried to breach a checkpoint above the main ballroom, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire before he was subdued.
No fatalities were reported, though one officer sustained minor injuries after being shot at close range while wearing protective gear.
According to acting United States (US) Attorney General Todd Blanche, the suspect is not cooperating with investigators but is expected to face formal charges. Preliminary findings suggest he acted alone and may have been targeting members of the administration. Officials also revealed he was heavily armed and had been staying at the same hotel hosting the event.
The chaotic scene forced guests—including top government officials, lawmakers, and journalists—to take cover as security personnel evacuated the president from the venue.
In remarks following the incident, Trump described the attacker as disturbed and claimed he had authored a manifesto, though authorities have not confirmed a clear motive.
The incident is another security scare involving the president, coming after previous assassination attempts in recent years.
