Cristiano Ronaldo’s quest to lift the FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end on Monday as Portugal crashed out of the 2026 tournament following a dramatic 1-0 defeat to arch-rivals Spain in a tense Round of 16 clash.

The fiercely contested all-Iberian encounter appeared destined for extra time after both sides cancelled each other out for much of the game. Portugal and Spain created opportunities but found clear-cut chances difficult to come by, with disciplined defending and tactical discipline dominating proceedings.

However, just as extra time loomed, Spain struck the decisive blow.

Mikel Merino scored in the 91st minute to send La Roja into the quarter-finals, breaking Portuguese hearts and keeping Spain’s dream of a second FIFA World Cup title alive.

Portugal entered the tournament among the favourites but saw their campaign come to a painful end at the first knockout hurdle, while Spain marched on with a dramatic late victory.

For Ronaldo, the defeat carries added significance as it is widely expected to mark his final appearance at the FIFA World Cup. The Portugal captain battled throughout the contest but was unable to inspire his side to a breakthrough against a resolute Spanish defence.

Spain remained patient and continued to probe for an opening before finally making their pressure count in stoppage time, with Merino’s late strike proving the difference in one of the most anticipated Round of 16 fixtures of the tournament.

Spain will now shift their focus to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 meeting between the United States and Belgium as they continue their pursuit of another world title.

For Portugal, however, the defeat brings to an end a campaign that promised much but ultimately fell short of expectations.

It also raises fresh questions about Ronaldo’s international future, with the legendary forward widely expected to have played his final match at football’s biggest tournament.

Despite the disappointing exit, Ronaldo’s legacy remains firmly intact. A UEFA European Championship winner, UEFA Nations League champion and the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner bows out of the global showpiece as one of the greatest footballers in history.

At the time of filing this report, there had been no verifiable post-match reaction from either team or their coaches following Portugal’s elimination and Spain’s progression to the quarter-finals.
