The NDC-Peter Obi Support Network (NDC-POSN) has called on the Federal Government to institute an immediate and comprehensive investigation into allegations by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, that his life and political activities are being threatened.
The group’s demand follows comments by Obi during a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, in which he expressed fears about his safety and alleged that the Federal Government was deliberately frustrating his personal and political activities.
“With the way this government is going, I may not even be alive to contest the 2027 election. Every single thing I do for a living, this government is deliberately frustrating. I face frustration every day. They recently locked my car at the airport,” Obi had said.
Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, the NDC-POSN said the allegations were serious and should be subjected to an independent investigation to reassure Nigerians that no individual or institution is involved in actions capable of undermining democratic participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group said the investigation should establish the facts surrounding Obi’s claims and ensure that no government agency engages in acts that threaten lives or frustrate lawful political activities.
It also urged security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), to provide adequate protection for Obi, members of his family and other political actors exercising their constitutional rights.
According to the group, all stakeholders in Nigeria’s democratic process have a responsibility to uphold the rule of law, protect human rights and preserve the integrity of the electoral process.
“The NDC-Peter Obi Support Network (NDC-POSN), an NDC-registered support group committed to uniting Nigerians for a Peter Obi presidency in 2027 and advancing the vision of a New Nigeria built on good governance, accountability, and opportunity for all, has noted with deep alarm and grave concern the recent statements by our principal, the NDC Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi,” the statement read.
The organisation said it viewed Obi’s allegations with “the utmost seriousness,” warning that any form of intimidation directed at opposition figures could weaken Nigeria’s democracy.
“The NDC-POSN views these developments with the utmost seriousness. Any form of targeted harassment, economic sabotage, social isolation, or intimidation directed at political opponents undermines the foundations of our democracy, violates constitutional rights, and threatens the peaceful conduct of the 2027 general elections,” the group stated.
Declaring its support for the former Anambra State governor, the organisation added:
“We stand in complete solidarity with Mr. Peter Obi and the entire Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Team. We categorically reject and condemn all acts of intimidation and undue interference in the lives and legitimate activities of opposition figures and their supporters.”
In the interview, Obi insisted that the challenges he described were not speculative but were experiences he faced regularly.
“It’s not an accusation. I know. I get frustration every day. They are attacking everybody who is in opposition personally. I am being attacked personally. Everything. Even to provide me with necessary things that I should have been entitled to, not at all,” he said.
The Federal Government and the security agencies mentioned in the statement had not responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
