Former Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has revealed the difficult conditions under which Nigeria’s football team won the men’s gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, saying the players had to fund parts of their campaign despite making history.

Speaking in a viral video, Okocha said members of the squad received little support during the tournament, alleging that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) failed to provide basic logistics and welfare.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s historic triumph, he said:

“We won the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but Nigerians had no idea what we went through. The NFF didn’t pay for our hotel, our training bus was taken away, and we were eating rice for lunch and dinner every day. We had to use our own money for food and even rent a mini bus ourselves.”

His remarks have reignited public debate over the welfare of Nigerian athletes and the level of institutional support provided to national teams representing the country at major international competitions.

Okocha’s account comes days after former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel expressed disappointment over an unfulfilled promise made to members of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)-winning squad.

In a separate viral interview, Mikel alleged that a promise by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan to allocate plots of land to members of the victorious team has yet to be fulfilled more than a decade after their triumph.

“Till today, I have not received the land that was promised to us after we won the AFCON in 2013,” Mikel said.

The comments by Okocha and Mikel have renewed concerns over the treatment and welfare of Nigerian athletes, with many questioning the implementation of incentives and rewards promised to sportsmen and women after major international successes.

Nigeria’s men’s football team made history at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games by becoming the first African nation to win the Olympic gold medal in football after defeating Argentina 3-2 in a dramatic final. The side, popularly known as the Dream Team, remains one of the most celebrated teams in Nigerian football history.

The Nigeria Football Federation has not publicly responded to Okocha’s claims.
