A non-governmental organisation (NGO) Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate judges handling cases related to the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State.
The group also appealed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice (Mrs.) Maryam Alooma Mukhtar to probe what it described as conflicting judgments by the judges.
HURIWA said today in a statement that the conflicting judgments by the judges on Anambra-related cases posed a big threat to the rule of law.
It specifically charged the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta to ensure that judges under him adhered to their conduct of conduct.
HURIWA, in the statement endorsed by its national coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, noted that the avalanche of judgments was capable of scuttling the reforms initiated by the CJN to rid the nation’s court system of corruption and abuse of power by judges.
Most disturbing, said the group, were the “clearly contradictory injunctions from the Port Harcourt and Abuja divisions of the Federal High Court which seem to be compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize several aspirants as official candidates for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives’ Grand Alliance (APGA).”
