by Our Reporter

Twenty two people were reportedly killed in nine communities in Kogi state on Monday morning by armed fulani herdsmen.

Briefing the House of Representatives Press Corps yesterday at the National Assembly, spokespersons of the affected communities Barrister Usman Ibrahim and Silas Ahiaba said that the nine communities are from Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi East senatorial District.

They disclosed that the herdsmen said several people were wounded several while hundreds were still missing.

The spokespersons said that the people of the affected communities are in distress having been chased away from their ancestral lands.

They explained that the affected communities require the urgent intervention of the state and federal government.

“We are all talking from the position of distress. As we speak, our fathers, grandfathers, parents and loved ones have been chased away from their ancestral homes where they have existed for over 200 years,” Barrister Ibrahim said.

“As at early hours of Monday, the communities were greeted with the invasion by heavily armed fulani herdsmen who killed and maimed so many. As at today, 22 people have been confirmed dead, several others either injured or missing. Right now, we are refugees in our own land”.

On intervention from the state government, he said the response from the state government has so far been skeletal with little or no effect.
