Former France international and Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of Senegal’s senior national team, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced on Tuesday.

Vieira succeeds Pape Thiaw, whose contract was terminated following Senegal’s elimination from the World Cup in the round of 32.

The 50-year-old former midfielder becomes the first coach appointed by Senegal to take charge of the national team after building his managerial career entirely at club level.

Confirming the appointment in a statement posted on X, the FSF said the date for Vieira’s official presentation and details of his formal installation would be announced later.

“Patrick Vieira is the new coach of Senegal senior national team. We will announce the date of the official presentation and the next step for his installation,” the federation said.

Vieira brings extensive managerial experience from clubs in England, France, Italy and the United States.

He began his senior coaching career with New York City FC before returning to France to manage Nice. He subsequently moved to the English Premier League, where he took charge of Crystal Palace.

The former France captain later returned to France as manager of Strasbourg before moving to Italy for a brief spell with Serie A side Genoa.

His appointment marks a significant shift in his coaching career, as he now takes charge of a national team for the first time after years of managing at club level.

As a player, Vieira enjoyed a distinguished career with some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City.

He was a key member of France’s squad that won the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil and also played an important role in the team’s triumph at the 2000 European Championship.

At Arsenal, Vieira established himself as one of the Premier League’s outstanding midfielders and captains, winning multiple domestic honours and the 2003–04 league title as part of the club’s unbeaten “Invincibles” side.

His international and club pedigree is expected to strengthen Senegal’s ambitions as the Teranga Lions seek to remain among Africa’s leading football nations.

Vieira inherits a squad that has enjoyed considerable success in recent years but now faces the challenge of rebuilding following the team’s disappointing World Cup campaign.

His immediate task will be to restore confidence in the national side, establish a clear playing philosophy and build a squad capable of competing for major continental and international honours.

The appointment also gives Vieira an opportunity to apply his experience of European football to a national team with an established pool of talented players competing at leading clubs around the world.

The FSF said further details regarding Vieira’s official unveiling and the next steps in his installation would be announced in due course.

The former France midfielder will now begin preparations for his first assignment with the Teranga Lions as he starts a new chapter in his managerial career.
