Sokoto government will partner with the United Nations Industrial
Organisation (UNIDO) to develop the capacity of the state’s leather works
industry to meet required standards and boost revenue generation, Governor
Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has said.

Speaking in Sokoto Thursday when he received the Head of Investment and
Technological Office of UNIDO in Nigeria, Mrs. Adebisi Olu Madimo, Tambuwal
said despite challenges confronting the leather industry in Nigeria, Sokoto
has continued to produce quality works for local and national consumption.

He said along with other private investors, the state government will
establish a leather cluster which will boost the sector.

Tambuwal said already, arrangements have been concluded to send a committee
to Italy to study the country’s leather works with a view to improving
Sokoto’s standards.

In her remarks, Madimo said expanding small and medium scale industries
will help governments move away from reliance on oil.

She said UNIDO will join the partnership of the state government and the
private investors to establish a leather cluster in the state.

She said the Sokoto leather works is one of the best in the Nigeria and has
survived years of challenges largely due to the determination of the
workers to continue production.
