The Nasarawa State Government says it has concluded plans to construct a stadium, to enhance sports development in the state.
The Acting Director of Sports, Mr Mathias Mamman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone on Monday that the development would help to reposition the state in the nation’s sports scene.
“The state government has finalised plans to build a standard stadium in the state capital, to enable it to be able to engage the youths through sports.
“Sports will certainly get a new look in Nasarawa State when the project is completed. I assure the people that the government means business in its sports development initiatives, this year,’’ he said.
Mamman attributed the limited development in sports in the state to inadequate facilities.
According to him, the state’s sports council has presented lots of programmes targeted at scouting and grooming talents who could represent the state in national competitions.
“There are programmes on ground for our sports development and we have mapped out strategies to implement them for the good of the state.
“Our School Sports festival for the year is to scout talents from school and tertiary institutions and we have presented our proposal to the state government for the event,’’ Mamman said.
He added that the state’s performance in national competitions would become more impressive with the development of a stadium in the state.
Nasarawa State finished in the 19th position on the Medals Table at the 18th National Sports Festival, tagged “Eko 2012,” with three gold, three silver and one bronze medals.
