The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to holding its national convention on November 15-16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, despite alleged efforts by “allies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)” to disrupt the event.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba made this declaration during a press briefing in Abuja, stressing that the convention, which is set to elect new national officers, is unstoppable.
Ologunagba accused unnamed PDP leaders and external forces of colluding with the APC to undermine the convention, claiming the ruling party is “jittery” about the PDP’s progress. “The APC is unsettled because the PDP has a 16-year record of prosperity, unlike their years of scarcity,” he said, highlighting the importance of the convention for Nigeria’s democracy.
The PDP spokesman also addressed speculation about the party’s 2027 presidential ticket, mentioning former President Goodluck Jonathan as one of several potential candidates. Responding to former Information Minister Prof. Jerry Gana’s claim that Jonathan would be offered the ticket, Ologunagba clarified, “I don’t speak for Professor Gana or President Jonathan. Our party has many worthy personalities, and we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.” He noted that PDP governors and other prominent figures are also viable contenders.
Ologunagba dismissed recent factional congresses in Plateau, Kebbi, and Cross River states, labeling them invalid. He stated that the PDP leadership postponed congresses in these states, and those claiming to be elected executives are “impostors.” He humorously described the Cross River event as a “carnival,” saying, “Those people went there to have a jolly time, drink, and enjoy. Calabar is a friendly place, but that wasn’t a PDP congress.” He warned that the party would pursue due process against anyone attempting to bring the PDP into disrepute.
The PDP remains focused on ensuring a transparent and successful convention, with Ologunagba reiterating the party’s commitment to following its established procedures. As preparations intensify, the PDP aims to present a united front to challenge the APC in the 2027 elections, leveraging its historical achievements to appeal to Nigerians.
