The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) has called for a balanced and constructive national conversation on Nigeria’s security challenges, urging stakeholders to support ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s security institutions while respecting constitutional processes.
The appeal follows increasing public discussions about the effectiveness of security operations and suggestions from various groups regarding possible reforms within the nation’s security architecture.
The Assembly emphasized that addressing insecurity requires collaboration among government institutions, security agencies, civil society groups, and citizens, rather than divisive debates that could distract from ongoing operations.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Speaker of the Assembly, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, said discussions about security leadership should be approached with caution and guided by the broader national interest.
According to him, the armed forces are currently engaged in critical operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other threats, making it important to maintain focus on achieving lasting security outcomes.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has the constitutional responsibility to make decisions regarding security leadership. Such decisions should be guided by established procedures and the overall security needs of the nation,” he said.
Danlami noted that while citizens have the right to express concerns about security matters, public discourse should remain constructive and aimed at supporting solutions.
He stressed that confidence in security institutions is essential for maintaining morale among personnel and ensuring the effectiveness of ongoing operations.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria require continued support, adequate resources, and institutional stability to effectively carry out their responsibilities. National conversations on security should contribute to strengthening these objectives,” he stated.
Danlami also encouraged stakeholders to avoid actions that could create unnecessary tension within the security sector, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and mutual trust.
“National security is a collective responsibility. All stakeholders should work together to promote peace, stability, and the safety of citizens across the country,” he said.
The AYA noted that accountability remains important and that assessments of security performance should be based on credible information, measurable outcomes, and professional evaluations.
The group maintained that reforms and policy decisions relating to security institutions should be pursued through lawful and transparent processes that advance national interests.
However, the Assembly reiterated that constitutional provisions clearly define the authority responsible for appointments and changes within the military leadership structure.
“Security challenges require institutional strengthening, strategic coordination, and sustained support for our armed forces. What Nigeria needs at this moment is unity of purpose and a shared commitment to restoring peace and stability,” Danlami added.
The Assembly commended officers and personnel of the armed forces for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting the country despite the challenges they face.
It urged Nigerians to continue supporting security agencies and to contribute positively to efforts aimed at improving safety and national cohesion.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to promoting national unity and constructive engagement on security matters, stressing that lasting solutions can only be achieved through cooperation and respect for democratic institutions.
