An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and community leader in Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State, Otunba Adewale Abayomi Badejo, has described the appointment of Mr. Tunji Disu as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) as a clear indication that the Nigeria Police Force is poised to confront emerging security challenges more decisively.
Badejo made the remark on Friday while speaking with journalists in Odogbolu, Ogun State.
According to him, the elevation of Disu to the highest office in the police hierarchy is a recognition of his experience, professionalism and commitment to service.
He said the appointment “signals the emergence of a Nigeria Police Force that will be repositioned to confront emerging security challenges head-on.”
Badejo noted that Disu’s promotion was in acknowledgment of his “visionary leadership, capability, exceptional professionalism, courage, integrity and dedication to duty.”
He expressed confidence that the new IGP’s record of operational excellence and ethical leadership would further strengthen the police institution.
“With his track record, it is clear that the Nigeria Police Force now has a leader capable of strengthening the institution and making it an envy of other nations. He is coming into office with the weight of expectations based on his exemplary record in service,” Badejo said.
The APC chieftain, who is also an alumnus of Lagos State University (LASU), described Disu as a tested and trusted officer who has consistently demonstrated competence throughout his career.
According to him, the new IGP’s rise to the top position in the force is not accidental.
“He has proved his mettle over the years. His rise to the highest office in the force is not by accident, as he has recorded notable successes in every command where he has served,” Badejo stated.
He added that Disu’s early entry into the officer corps placed him on a strong leadership trajectory and exposed him to critical aspects of policing.
“His early years in the force introduced him to criminal investigation, intelligence gathering and operational policing, which helped shape his leadership capacity,” he said.
Badejo also recalled Disu’s leadership of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos in 2015, noting that the role further sharpened his operational experience.
“His headship of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos strengthened his investigative experience and exposed him to complex criminal operations, as he led the tactical unit responsible for tackling armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes in Nigeria’s largest city,” he said.
He further highlighted Disu’s tenure as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State as one of the strongest demonstrations of his leadership capacity.
“His performance as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State remains one of the strongest testaments to his capacity. He restored law and order at a time when the state was confronted with serious security challenges and political tension,” Badejo noted.
He also recalled Disu’s brief tenure as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where he said the officer left a legacy of purposeful leadership after his deployment from Rivers State.
While congratulating the new police chief, Badejo urged him to remain steadfast and uphold the core values of his alma mater.
“I urge him to remain steadfast and continue to uphold the tenets of Lagos State University — excellence, unblemished leadership and unwavering dedication to duty,” he added.
Disu was recently confirmed as the substantive Inspector-General of Police by the National Police Council following his appointment in an acting capacity by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after the retirement of his predecessor.
