Substitute Mikel Merino struck two minutes from time to fire Spain into the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium on Friday, as La Roja’s relentless pressure finally broke the Red Devils’ resistance in a pulsating quarter-final clash.

The encounter in Los Angeles lived up to expectations, with Spain’s dominance in possession meeting Belgium’s disciplined defensive display and dangerous counterattacks in one of the tournament’s standout fixtures.

Luis de la Fuente’s side deservedly took the lead in the 30th minute when Fabián Ruiz capped a flowing team move with a composed finish after Spain had controlled much of the opening exchanges.

Belgium, however, responded before the break as Charles De Ketelaere capitalised on a defensive lapse to level the score, ensuring the teams went into half-time on even terms.

The second half developed into a tense tactical battle, with Spain dictating the tempo while Belgium looked to exploit space through Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.

Belgium’s hopes suffered a setback late in the game when first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off injured, leaving substitute Senne Lammens to take over between the posts.

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Spain found the breakthrough in the 88th minute. Lammens could only parry a powerful effort into the path of Merino, who reacted quickest to smash home the rebound and send the Spanish bench and supporters into celebration.

“It was an incredible feeling. We never stopped believing, even when the match became difficult. We kept pushing because we knew one chance could decide everything,” Merino said after the match.

The midfielder added:

“To score a winning goal in a World Cup quarter-final is something every footballer dreams about. I’m proud of this team because everyone fought until the very end.”

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente hailed his players’ patience and determination after another hard-fought knockout victory.

“I am very proud of this group. They showed character, patience and belief against a very strong Belgium side. These are the kind of matches that define great teams,” he said.

Looking ahead to a heavyweight semi-final clash with France, the Spanish manager said his side would approach the contest with confidence while remaining mindful of the challenge ahead.

“We respect France enormously, but we also trust ourselves. We have earned our place in the semi-finals, and now we want to take the next step.”

For Belgium, the defeat marked another heartbreaking end to a World Cup campaign despite an impressive run to the last eight, which included knockout victories over Senegal and the United States.

The Red Devils matched Spain for long periods but were ultimately undone by sustained pressure and Merino’s late intervention.

Spain will now face France in a blockbuster semi-final as they bid to continue their impressive knockout run and move one step closer to lifting football’s most coveted trophy.
