History was made in the ancient city of Ibadan on Friday as Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, former governor of Oyo State, was officially crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Ladoja, who clocked 81 years on Thursday, a day to his coronation, took over the crown from Owolabi Olakulehin who died in June.
The coronation, which drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, took place at the iconic Mapo Hall, a venue that has hosted many landmark political and cultural events in the southwest.
The monarch ascended the throne following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin in June, who reigned briefly before passing on. Governor Seyi Makinde formally presented the staff of office to the new Olubadan, describing the coronation as a proud moment for Ibadan people and a continuation of the revered succession tradition that sets the Ibadan monarchy apart.
While exercising his powers to crown the Olubadan Makinde at about 3:05 pm, Gov Makinde said, “This is a momentum occasion in the presence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the presence of people and in the presence of God.
“In the exercise of the power conferred on me as the Governor, I hereby present the staff of office to Oba, His Imperial Majesty, Senator, Governor, Engineer, my Baba, His Imperial Majesty, Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa 1st.
“This is his confirmation as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. I so present.”
His ascension is remarkable not only because of his age but also due to his political pedigree. A one-time senator representing Oyo South and governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007, he is widely regarded as a pragmatic politician and respected elder statesman. His coronation bridges politics and tradition, giving Ibadan a ruler whose experience spans governance, business, and community leadership.
For decades, he had been a prominent figure in Ibadanland’s traditional hierarchy. As the Otun Olubadan before his elevation, he was next in line under the city’s unique succession system, which advances senior chiefs to the throne in an orderly and dispute-free manner. His rise has long been anticipated, with many in Ibadan praising the fairness of the process.
The coronation ceremony was carried out in rich Yoruba tradition and the venue adorned with cultural symbols and banners, while traditional drummers, singers, and dancers entertained the thousands of guests who thronged the historic venue.
The event attracted an impressive roll call of dignitaries. The list of dignitaries includes President Bola Tinubu, former Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade and several traditional rulers also graced the occasion.
