A suit seeking the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is scheduled to come up for hearing on Monday at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The suit was filed in December 2025 by a public interest group, the National Forum of Former Legislators, which is asking the court to order the removal of ADC and several other political parties from the register of recognised parties.
According to the group, the affected parties have allegedly failed to meet constitutional and electoral requirements necessary for their continued existence under Nigeria’s democratic framework.
The Forum explained that the action is not politically motivated but aimed at sanitising the political space and strengthening the country’s electoral system.
“Our action is geared toward enriching and expanding Nigeria’s electoral jurisprudence,” the group said, stressing that weak and inactive political parties undermine democratic accountability.
The organisation added that the case represents an important step toward building stronger democratic institutions and promoting a more credible and functional party system in Nigeria.
The outcome of the suit is expected to have far-reaching implications for party politics ahead of future elections, as the court considers whether non-performing parties should retain legal status.
