A DSS operative narrowly escaped a violent mob attack at the Junior Secondary School, Kayada polling station in Kuje, as tensions escalated during the ongoing FCT Area Council elections.
Over 50 youths confronted the operative, accusing him of taking videos and pictures of alleged vote-buying activities. He was manhandled for several minutes, visibly shaken, while desperately trying to avoid serious harm.
Despite the severity of the attack, he was eventually released, managing to recover his stolen wallet and a damaged handset.
Surprisingly, no security personnel intervened during the ordeal, leaving him to flee the scene on a motorcycle.
The incident sparked outrage among voters who questioned why security operatives allowed one of their own to be left at the mercy of the mob. Observers noted the episode reflected broader concerns about the conduct of security personnel, who often appear passive even when citizens are at risk.
The attack also highlighted the persistent issue of vote-trading, which was reported across several parts of the FCT, underscoring the challenges in ensuring free and fair elections.
The event in Kuje buttresses the high tension and security risks at polling stations, revealing both voter frustration and gaps in law enforcement oversight during the elections.
