Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have uncovered a shipment of high-potency illicit drugs concealed in water purifier machines imported from the Netherlands, in what officials describe as another attempt by international drug traffickers to evade security checks.
The agency said the seizure was made at a courier company in Lagos on May 26, following intelligence-led operations targeting transnational drug trafficking networks. Recovered from the shipment were three kilograms of ketamine and 199 grams of MDMA, popularly known as Ecstasy, carefully hidden within the appliances.
According to the NDLEA, the concealment method was designed to beat routine screening procedures, but operatives were able to detect and intercept the consignment before it could reach its intended destination.
Confirming the seizure, NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said the agency remained committed to dismantling drug trafficking networks exploiting legitimate import channels.
“Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have uncovered consignments of high potency illicit drugs concealed in water purifier machines shipped to Lagos from Netherlands,” Babafemi said in a statement.
The latest interception highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods adopted by drug traffickers, who often disguise narcotics in household appliances, food items and other imported goods to avoid detection.
The Lagos operation was part of a broader nationwide crackdown that recorded several major seizures and arrests across the country. In Kaduna State, NDLEA operatives arrested a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, alongside another suspect, Salomi Ezekiel, after recovering 100 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 1,246 kilograms from their residence in the Gonin Gora area.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers involved in the operations and urged them to sustain the momentum in the fight against drug trafficking.
Marwa praised personnel for combining aggressive enforcement operations with public enlightenment campaigns under the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative, stressing that the battle against illicit drugs requires vigilance and sustained commitment.
The agency said investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the Netherlands shipment and unravel the wider network linked to the consignment.
The seizure comes amid renewed efforts by the NDLEA to disrupt international drug supply chains and curb the growing threat posed by synthetic drugs such as ketamine and MDMA, which remain popular among traffickers because of their high street value and demand.
