The Chairman of the Legislative Mentorship Initiative (LMI) Selection Committee, Hon. Henry Nwawuba, has led a strategic planning session ahead of the selection of fellows for the initiative’s fifth cohort.
The session, held on Wednesday in Abuja, focused on strengthening the application, screening and assessment processes, while drawing lessons from previous cohorts to establish clear and credible standards for selecting the next generation of legislative leaders.
Nwawuba, who is also the Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust, said the selection process for Cohort 5 must be guided by merit, fairness, transparency and inclusivity.
He stressed that academic qualifications alone would not determine successful candidates, noting that the initiative was also interested in applicants who demonstrated character, critical thinking, curiosity, leadership potential and a commitment to public service.
“Merit, fairness, transparency and inclusivity must guide the selection process. We are not simply looking for impressive academic credentials; we are looking for young people with character, critical thinking, curiosity and the potential to lead,” he said.
According to him, the committee would also give consideration to candidates who demonstrate a willingness to learn, serve and contribute meaningfully to democratic governance.
“The kind of leaders we need for the future are those who are prepared to learn, to serve and to understand that leadership is fundamentally about responsibility to society,” Nwawuba said.
He said the planning session provided an opportunity for members of the committee to review and refine the selection framework and ensure that the fifth cohort remained consistent with the broader objectives of the LMI.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that the process is credible and that those eventually selected truly represent the values and aspirations of the Legislative Mentorship Initiative,” he said.
Nwawuba further emphasised the importance of investing in young people with a strong understanding of legislative processes, public policy and democratic governance.
He said exposing young Africans to the workings of legislatures would help strengthen democratic institutions while preparing them for future leadership responsibilities.
The Legislative Mentorship Initiative is a leadership development and mentorship programme designed to expose young Africans to legislative processes, democratic governance, public policy and public service.
Through the programme, selected fellows gain practical exposure to the workings of the legislature and opportunities to learn from experienced legislators, policymakers and other practitioners.
The programme also seeks to develop participants’ understanding of lawmaking, public policy, leadership and the responsibilities associated with public office.
With the commencement of preparations for Cohort 5, the Selection Committee is expected to assess applicants against a range of criteria designed to identify young people with leadership potential, sound character and a demonstrated interest in public service.
The committee is also expected to ensure that the selection process provides equal opportunity to qualified applicants while maintaining high standards of assessment.
Nwawuba said the credibility of the selection process was essential to the success of the initiative, adding that those eventually selected must be capable of reflecting the values of responsible leadership, integrity and service.
He said the ultimate objective was to nurture a new generation of leaders who understand that effective leadership requires knowledge, accountability, empathy and a commitment to the public good.
