Senate President, Senator David Mark has implored religious leaders across the divide to work out an acceptable modus operandi that would guarantee religious harmony and social justices in the country.
Senator Mark noted that Nigeria’s constitution prescribes a secular state where every citizen is free to practices his or her religion without fear of molestation or intimidation.
Playing host to a delegation of Knights of St. Mulumba in his office in Abuja, Senator Mark cautioned that no person or persons should impose or inhibit any other person from practicing his or her faith.
The Knights of St. Mulumba of the Catholic Church, Nigeria were in Abuja to brief Senator Mark on their forthcoming 34th Annual Supreme Council convention tagged :” Religious Tolerance, Good Governance and Social Justice-Panacea for peace” to be delivered by the Bishop of Sokoto Mathew Hassan Kukah next week.
The Senate President noted that peace is a sine qua non to development and therefore pleaded with the clergy to do all that is needed to stop religious violence.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Anthony Onuh praised the Senate for stoutly rejection the pressure from international community on same sex marriage adding ” your positive stand in condemning the obnoxious same sex marriage is a monumental feat we cannot forget easily”.
Onuh thanked the Senate for maintaining a harmonious working relationship with the executive in running the affairs of the country but requested for cooperation in the passage of the 2014 budget when presented to the National Assembly by the President.
