Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra in Onitsha on Wednesday distributed cheques totaling N150 million to 1,250 schools in the state to revive school sports.
The governor issued the cheques to heads of primary schools and principals of secondary schools.
“With this gesture, the government has provided 1,000 primary schools with N100,000 each; while 250 secondary schools got N200,000 each.
“The grant is for the development of school sports and organising competitions among your pupils and students in various sporting activities,’’ he said.
The governor said the government was determined to revive sports in schools to harness budding talents and restore the lost glory of the state as a pacesetter in the country.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr. Edozie Aroh, lauded the governor for bringing back school sports.
“I urge the benefiting schools to ensure prudent management of the funds to develop sports infrastructure and organise competitions,’’ Aroh said.
In his reaction, Mr Benneth Ibekwe, Transition Committee Chairman, Orumba South Local Government, said that Obi’s outstanding initiatives in the education and sports sectors were worthy of commendation and emulation.
“Gov. Obi is the first governor to demonstrate practical commitment in uplifting sports, providing a better future and equal opportunity for every child in sports development in the state,’’ Ibekwe said. (NAN)
