In an unprecedented move, the House of Representatives, this week, passed
131 bills through first reading.
It will be the first time such a feat will be achieved by any assembly
since the nation’s return to democracy 16 years ago.
The bills are part of the outdated laws and statutes which the 8th
Assembly under the leadership of Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara promised to update
before the end of next year.
While referring the bills to the Rules and Business Committee for
scheduling for second reading, the Speaker asked the chairman to ensure
that at least 20 of them are listed for consideration in the coming week.
It will be recalled that the special committee commissioned by the House
to review outdated laws and statues ırecently paid the Speaker a courtesy
call and submitted its work, which has now been made into bills for
passage by the National Assembly.
