River State House of Assembly has threatened to arrest the state Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence- Nimi over her failure to appear before the House.
The Speaker, Mr. Otelemba Dan Amachree chided the commissioner for her attitude and threatened that the Assembly would not hesitate to issue an order for her arrest if she fails to appear at the next date. The Leader of the House, Mr. Chidi Lloyd further called for the arrest of the Commissioner.
The state Assembly had summoned the Commissioner to appear before it over the recent recruitment of teachers conducted by her ministry.
Reacting to the Commissioner’s failure to appear before the House, the state chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) through a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam, described Nimi’s action as a slap on the face of the lawmakers and called on her to tender an unreserved apology to the House.
The party called for the cancellation of the entire recruitment exercise conducted by her.
The Rivers State House of Assembly has for once acted in the interest of Rivers people by spotting errors in the teachers employment exercise conducted by the Education Commissioner who has taken over the functions of the UBE Board and Post Primary Schools Board, ACN said.
The party said advised the House to take the failure of Dame Nimi to appear before it serious as public officials must be held responsible for their actions and disclosed that it will soon call for the investigation into the activities of the commissioner.
