The Kwara State Government has vowed to ensure that sanitary inspectors intensified house-to-house inspection to ensure clean environment.
The Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Hon. Samuel Bamisaiye, said this in Ilorin on Thursday when he received reports from Environmental Health Officers on the misuse of drains.
According to him, sanitary inspectors will be strengthened to ensure that drains around shops and houses are cleared to allow free flow of water.
Bamisaiye expressed regret that in spite of the ongoing sensitisation, people still dumped refuse indiscriminately into drains, gutters and waterways.
According to him, the government has spent lots of funds on de-silting and expansion of drainages, channelisation of river course as part of efforts to prevent flooding and erosion.
He warned all residents to desist from dumping refuse into drainages and waterways reiterated his call on all residents along the river course to vacate such areas to prevent loss of lives and properties.
He also warned that all those arrested for contravening environmental and forestry laws would be prosecuted.
Bamisaiye further reminded the people that chainsaw activities were still suspended just as charcoal production is prohibited in the state.
The commissioner enjoined traditional rulers not to allow the felling of trees by chainsaw operators and charcoal marketers in their domains, to prevent environmental hazards. (NAN)
