Heavy downpour:A 3-storey building, custodial centre collapsed in Onitsha

A three storey building located at 22 Nkisi Aroli Street, Onitsha in
Anambra state and custodial centre (formerly known as Onitsha prison)
early hours of Wednesday collapsed following heavy downpour which lasted
for hours.

The building which belonged to one Chukwuma Njeka collapsed at about 8
a.m according an eye witness due to heavy downpour.

However, when the Commissioner of Police, John Abang visited the scene
with others no casualty was recorded and value of property damaged is
yet to be ascertained.

The scene was cordoned off by the Police to prevent looters from taking
advantage and to clear the rubrics.

Abang equally visited the Onitsha custodial centre (formerly known as
Onitsha prison) where the rear fence of the  prison also collapsed at
about 6:30am following heavy downpour.

He ordered for immediate deployment of Police personnel to secure the
area as no casualty was recorded and no inmates escaped due to the
collapsed fence.

Meanwhile an auto crash involving a commuter bus with Registration
number JMT 94 XL and 911 truck with registration number XB 733 GDD
occurred at Boromeo roundabout, Onitsha occurred at 08:am, leaving a
male victim dead.

The police MTD personnels attached to inland town Division rushed five
casualties to St Charles Boromeo Hospital, Onitsha where one male victim
whose identity is yet to be ascertained was certified dead by the
medical doctor.

Four others who sustained various degrees of injuries were responding to
treatment when the CP also visited the hospital.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed who confirmed the
incident said the corpse of the only dead passenger was deposited at the
St Charles Boromeo hospital mortuary for postmortem examination and case
is under investigation.
