President Goodluck Jonathan has nominated Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar as the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
In a letter date July 3, 2012, and addressed President of the Senate,Senator David Mark, President Jonathan said the nomination was in conformity with Section 231 (2) of the 1999 Constitution.
In the same letter, Jonathan nominated Justice Kumai Bayang Akaahs (North West) and Justice Stanley Shenko Alagoa (South South) for elevation as Justices of the Supreme Court.
According to the President, the nominations were necessitated “by the impending retirement from service of Hon. Justice Dahiru Musdapher, Chief Justice of Nigeria, and Hon. Justice F. F. Tabai.”
