The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has lauded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for appointing Lieutenant Colonel Onyinyechi Anele as the first female Spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, an appointment the union describes as a watershed moment in the nation’s military history.

Announced on April 22, 2025, Lt. Col. Anele’s elevation to the prestigious role is seen as a progressive step toward gender inclusivity in the armed forces, breaking a long-standing barrier in a traditionally male-dominated sphere.

With a background in Mass Communication and Strategic Studies, Lt. Col. Anele is widely expected to bring a new era of dynamic public engagement, strengthened military-civil relations, and greater transparency in Army communications. Her blend of military discipline and strategic communication acumen positions her uniquely to lead reforms in the Army’s media and public interface.

In a statement issued by Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, Jide Oyekunle, the union described her appointment as a “victory for women” and a significant boost for gender representation in national leadership.

“The appointment of women in strategic positions, particularly in the military, is vital for building an inclusive society where leadership reflects the strength and diversity of the nation. Lieutenant Colonel Anele’s emergence as Army Spokesperson underscores the military’s commitment to gender parity and provides a strong message of hope for young women aspiring to leadership roles,” the statement read in part.

The NUJ further noted that the appointment is not only a boost for the image of the Nigerian Army but also an inspirational moment for young Nigerian girls, reinforcing the message that no field is off-limits due to gender.

“We warmly congratulate Lieutenant Colonel Onyinyechi Anele on this trailblazing achievement,” the union stated. “We encourage her to see this appointment not only as a duty but as a platform to inspire, reform, and advance the ideals of transparent and inclusive leadership. We are confident in her capacity to rise to the occasion and make a lasting impact.”

The union also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote equality, professionalism, and excellence across all sectors of national life.
