The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday said it is yet to take a decision on the Supreme Court judgement on the position of National Chairmanship of Labour Party (LP) and National Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
There were media reports on Thursday that the commission had re-affirmed Julius Abure as LP National Chairman and Sen. Samuel Anyanwu as PDP National Secretary and further updated its website to reflect the recent decisions.
There were claim that checks revealed that INEC has updated its website to reflect these names in relation to both political pparties, just as the commission also listed Umar Farouk Ibrahim as the National Secretary of the LP.
The false report claimed that INEC said the update was “based on an order of court,” but did not state if a similar court order led to the recognition of Anyanwu for the PDP.
Dismissing the information, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi in the Ccommission’s X handle said the commission is yet to take a position on the leadership of both parties.
He wrote, “Our attention has been drawn to some media reports claiming that the Commission has recognised certain persons as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP). The reports also inferred that the Commission has restored a particular individual as the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), referring to the listings on the Commission’s official website.
“However, the reports are false and misleading. The Commission has not made any decision in respect of either the LP or PDP.
“The names of the National Officers of the LP had previously been uploaded to our website following a court order, not related in any way to the latest judgement of the Supreme Court. In the same manner, the name of the National Secretary of the PDP on the same website was neither deleted nor reinstated.
“As a law abiding institution, the Commission is carefully studying the judgement of the Supreme Court on the Labour Party and will communicate its decision to the public in due course” the commission stated.
