The Kaduna State Government on Tuesday began the disbursement of N300 million as scholarship allowance to indigines of the state studying in tertiary institutions.
Mr Denis Wahal, Executive Secretary of the state Teachers’ Service Board, said while disbursing the allowances in Zaria that 26, 000 students would benefit from the grant for the 2012/2013 academic session.
He said it was designed to assist the students in their educational pursuit.
“The Kaduna state government has approved and released the sum of N300 million for the payment of over 26,000 students in institutions of higher learning from the state.”
Wahal said the state government had prioritised the study of science and language courses in the payment of the allowances.
“I cannot give you the exact figure of how the payment is segmented, but all I know is that, if you are studying sciences and language-related courses your amount will be higher than others.”
He appealed to the beneficiaries to make good use of the money for their educational advancement, and advised parents to encourage their children to study hard for the progress of the nation.
On upward review of the allowance, Wahal said the state government would look into it “when the economy improves.”
