Suspected kidnappers have abducted several mourners escorting the remains of a late Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer in Kogi State, before abandoning the corpse and demanding a ₦50 million ransom for the victims’ release.
The incident reportedly occurred along the Ososo–Ajaokuta axis of Kogi State as family members, friends and colleagues were conveying the remains of the deceased Deputy Corps Commander to Benue State for burial.
According to reports, the armed assailants intercepted the funeral convoy, forced some of the mourners into the surrounding bush and took the corpse along with them.
The remains of the late FRSC officer were later abandoned by the kidnappers and subsequently recovered around Ejule in Kogi State. However, the abducted mourners remain in captivity.
The kidnappers have reportedly established contact with the victims’ families and are demanding a ₦50 million ransom for their release.
The late FRSC officer was scheduled to be buried on Friday in AiOde, Upu community, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, but the attack disrupted the funeral procession.
The incident has heightened concerns over the country’s deteriorating security situation, with residents expressing fears that criminal attacks have become so widespread that even funeral convoys are no longer immune.
Security agencies are expected to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted mourners and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
