The suspension of political analyst Anthony Kila by ARISE News over allegations of academic credential falsification has sparked debate, with reactions divided between calls for due process and demands for a thorough investigation.
While some have expressed sympathy for the analyst, known for his articulate contributions to public affairs discussions, others have commended Premium Times for its investigative report and called on the relevant authorities to establish the facts and take appropriate action if the allegations are substantiated.
Kila was a familiar face on television, particularly on ARISE News, where he frequently appeared on ThisDay Live, the Sunday programme hosted by Reuben Abati. He was often introduced as “Professor Anthony Kila”, a title that reinforced his public profile as an academic and political commentator.
However, the controversy has now raised questions about the authenticity of his academic qualifications, including his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
In response, ARISE News announced Kila’s immediate suspension from its platforms, citing its commitment to credibility and integrity.
In a statement issued by its Editorial Board on Tuesday and published on its official X account, the network said it contacted Kila on October 3, 2026, to give him an opportunity to respond to the allegations. However, he requested more time to address the claims.
According to the network, he had yet to respond 10 days after being contacted.
“Following claims that Anthony Kila falsified his entire academic credentials, we contacted Mr Kila on 03 October, 2026 with the allegations.
“He asked for more time to respond to the claims. He has not responded 10 days after,” the statement read.
ARISE News said it would no longer feature Kila on any of its platforms, either immediately or in the future.
The network also clarified that it was unaware of the allegations when he appeared on its programmes as a freelance political analyst.
“ARISE News was unaware of these allegations at the time Anthony Kila appeared on our platform and as we take matters of credibility and integrity extremely seriously,” the statement added.
The development has renewed attention on the need to verify the academic credentials of public commentators, particularly where professional titles and academic qualifications contribute to their authority and influence in public discourse.
For Kila, however, the controversy extends beyond his suspension from the television network. The central issue is whether the allegations will be substantiated and what consequences, if any, may follow.
Will the relevant authorities investigate the claims and establish the facts? If Kila is found to have falsified his credentials, could he face legal or professional consequences?
Conversely, if he is cleared, will he seek legal redress against Premium Times over the report?
For now, these questions remain unanswered. Their resolution will depend on the available evidence, Kila’s response and the findings of any credible investigation.
Ultimately, the key question is whether the allegations against the celebrated analyst can be supported by verifiable evidence or will be disproved. Until then, the matter remains unresolved.
