Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir emerged as the hero with a sensational penalty save to deny Lionel Messi, helping Egypt maintain a shock 1-0 lead over Argentina in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash in Atlanta.
The African side stunned the reigning world champions with an early breakthrough before producing another defining moment when Argentina were awarded a penalty in search of an equaliser.
With thousands inside the packed stadium expecting Messi to restore parity, the Argentina captain stepped up from 12 yards. But Shobeir had other ideas.
The Egyptian goalkeeper read the effort perfectly, diving low to his left to produce a superb two-handed save that sent Egypt’s players and supporters into wild celebration while leaving Messi visibly frustrated.
Shobeir’s heroics preserved Egypt’s slender advantage and injected even more drama into a captivating knockout encounter.
Argentina have responded by piling relentless pressure on the Egyptian defence, dominating possession and pushing forward in search of a breakthrough. However, Egypt have stood firm, defending resolutely as they chase what would rank among the greatest upsets in FIFA World Cup history.
