Former Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Phillip Aduda, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the lingering crisis within the opposition party.
In a letter dated March 15, 2026, and addressed to his Karu Ward chairman, Aduda formally communicated his decision to quit the PDP, attributing it to the protracted internal crisis within the party.
Aduda, who served in the seventh, eighth and ninth National Assembly, said his resignation takes immediate effect, ending his long-standing affiliation with the opposition party.
Shortly after submitting his resignation, the former lawmaker defected to the APC, signaling his entry into the ruling party and underscoring ongoing political realignments in the country.
Aduda’s decision is seen as a further setback for the PDP, once a dominant political force in the Federal Capital Territory.
In the recently conducted Area Council elections in the territory, the party secured only one victory in Gwagwalada Area Council.
In the letter, which he personally signed, Aduda expressed appreciation to the PDP for the opportunities it gave him throughout his political career.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect due to the crisis in the party,” he stated.
“I remain grateful for the opportunity the party gave me to serve in various elective positions in our nation. Please accept the assurances of my highest esteem,” he added.
Observers say the defection could reshape the political dynamics of the FCT as parties begin early positioning ahead of future elections, with more realignments expected in the coming months.
