Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi on Tuesday ordered Nigerian troops to flog civil servants who arrived late for work at the state’s Government House.
As seen in a video clip shared on Twitter by human rights lawyer, Chidi Odinkalu, the governor personally supervised the flogging. He was on a project inspection in Abakaliki, the state capital when his convoy stopped at the gate of the Government House.
An angry Umahi who did not step down from official vehicle all the while, then ordered soldiers to stop civil servants who had arrived late and flog them.
The civil servants were seen rolling on the ground in anguish as they were flogged by the soldiers, even as onlookers watched from a distance.
Reacting to the video, Odinkalu wrote on his Twitter page, “So, today in Ebonyi, @GovDaveUmahi went for a project inspection & then instructs the soldiers to flog – yes flog! – civil servants who arrived late.
“Not done, Dave Umahi supervised the flogging. Tomorrow, he’ll be rewarded with seat in @NGRSenate”.
Pointblanknews.com recalls that in 2019, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State paid an unscheduled visit to state secretariat and locked out hundreds of civil servants who came late to work.
Governor AbdulRazaq arrived at the secretariat at 7.55am and when it was 8.00am, he ordered security men to lock the two entrances into the secretariat complex.
Hundreds of workers were locked out of the complex and the few workers that had arrived for work rushed to their offices.
